Building the Future of MyFlight: April 2025

MyFlight Tours Headquarters site work in April

Building the Future of MyFlight: April 2025

April was one of those pinch me moments for our entire team, because it marked the day this dream stopped being “someday” and officially became real.

We officially broke ground on the new MyFlight Tours headquarters, a 12,000 square foot facility at Detroit City Airport that represents the first new commercial development at the airport in more than 60 years. That’s a huge milestone not just for MyFlight, but for Detroit and the East Side. Our groundbreaking ceremony was a true moment in time, with city leaders and aviation supporters there to celebrate what this project means for the community and the future of aviation in Detroit, and we shared more about that day in our full announcement post.

From there, the work started immediately. The site was surveyed and staked to mark the exact footprint, then the foundation layout began taking shape as forms went in and excavation got underway. Between ground level progress and aerial views, we could finally see the scale of what we’re building.

By the end of April, we started the exciting transition from groundwork to structure with the first beams and early steel going up. For the first time, the shape of the MyFlight Tours headquarters began to emerge.

This new facility is being built to elevate the entire MyFlight experience, with a larger lobby and lounge style space, a bar and food, and room to host unforgettable moments and events alongside aviation.

Here’s a look at how April came together, step by step.

Quick Facts

  • Location: Detroit City Airport
  • Size: 12,000 square feet
  • Milestone: First new commercial development at the airport in 60 plus years. A true testament MyFlight Tours commitment to revitalizing Detroit’s East Side and the Coleman A. Young Airport
  • Purpose: Home of the MyFlight Tours headquarters and an elevated guest experience

What the new space will include

This facility is being built to elevate the entire MyFlight experience from start to finish and set a new standard for what a helicopter tour can be. Our new MyFlight Tours headquarters is designed to be one of a kind, unlike anything else in the industry, because we are not just building a place to check in. We are building a destination.

We are redefining helicopter tours by creating an experience that starts the moment you walk through the doors. A larger lobby and lounge style space will make arrivals feel effortless and elevated, with room to relax, take photos, celebrate, and soak it all in before and after your flight. We are also bringing in a bar and food so guests can turn their tour into a full night out, whether it’s date night, a birthday, a proposal, or a group celebration.

At the heart of it, this is about more than aviation. It’s about creating a space where unforgettable moments happen every day. Not just a flight, an experience.

SITE SURVEY + BUILDING PLACEMENT

Before construction could begin, the team surveyed the land and marked the exact footprint so the MyFlight Tours headquarters will sit perfectly on the property. This was the first moment we could truly see where everything will go, from the entrance and main structure to the space surrounding the building. Watching the layout get marked in real time made the whole project feel tangible, because the plans were no longer just drawings, they were now on the ground.

FOUNDATION FORMS + LAYOUT

After the site was laid out, foundation forms went in to define the edges and layout of the building. This is the stage where lines on a plan turn into something physical, and you can finally start to understand the shape and scale of what’s being built. Every measurement matters here, because the foundation sets the standard for everything that comes next. It was exciting to see the structure start to feel real, even before any concrete was poured.

EXCAVATION + DIGGING THE FOUNDATION

Once the forms were in place, excavation began and the foundation area was dug out. This is where the footprint really started to take shape and the project suddenly felt very real, especially from the aerial shots. You could clearly see the outline of where the MyFlight Tours headquarters will stand, and you could feel the momentum picking up as the site changed day by day.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR DETROIT

This project represents much more than just a building; it is a significant investment in the future of aviation in Detroit and a monumental step forward for the East Side community. This initiative is set to infuse new energy and excitement into Detroit City Airport, creating an environment that will attract not only locals but also visitors and aviation enthusiasts from all over. We take immense pride in being part of a groundbreaking venture that will serve as a welcoming hub for generations to come, offering diverse experiences and fostering a sense of connectivity between the people of Detroit and the world of aviation.

WRAPPING UP APRIL

April was all about getting the groundwork right. From staking the footprint to setting forms, starting excavation, and seeing the first structure begin, this month set the foundation for everything ahead. Next month, we’ll share more as the MyFlight Tours headquarters continues to rise and the build truly moves from the ground up.

How big is the new building?

The new facility is 12,000 square feet and designed with two distinct levels. The first floor is guest facing and open to the public, with a larger lobby and lounge style space plus new offerings like food, drinks, and an event space for unforgettable celebrations alongside aviation.

The second floor is home base for the MyFlight team, with dedicated space for our company employees including customer service, marketing, video and content creation, and our executive and leadership staff. We’re also building a classroom and training facility so new hires and team members from every location can train together here before heading out to their home base.

Will MyFlight Tours still operate during construction?

Yes. You can book a flight directly on our website. We are currently operating in a temporary facility, right alongside our new terminal. Flights and experiences will continue as construction moves forward, and we’ll keep sharing progress updates throughout the build.

Will this change anything about the tours?

The flights will still be the same unforgettable views, but the overall experience will be elevated. The goal is to make everything smoother, more comfortable, and more memorable from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.
